Joseph Plateau was a pioneering Belgian physicist, best known for inventing the phenakistiscope in 1832 — one of the first devices to create the illusion of moving images. His invention laid the foundation for the development of modern cinema by demonstrating how still images can appear to move when shown in rapid succession.
