Stamp Issues 1873–1900
History of Puerto Rico - Puerto Rico was originally inhabited by Taíno people; in 1493 Christopher Columbus arrived and it became a colony of Spain for over 400 years; after the Spanish-American War in 1898, it was ceded to the United States; today it is a U.S. territory with a mixed culture and limited political rights, a developing economy, strong migration links to the mainland, and ongoing debates about statehood, independence, and its future political status.
